The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) under the United Nations adopted the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments at the conference on 13 February 2004 in London, and presented the instrument for ratification by member states.
Also known as the Ballast Water Management Convention, it aims to prevent the movement, reduce and eradicate harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens which can move from one ecosystem to another and may become invasive species in new environment.
Turkey signed and became a State Party to the Convention in the 67th Session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) on 13-17 October 2014.
